Helen Haines lost both legs in an alleged attack on October 19, and the incident has triggered a sharp divide in the Australian parliament over how leaders should respond to rising political violence.

Monique Ryan and Zali Steggall, two crossbench members of parliament, described Opposition Leader Angus Taylor's recent speech as tone deaf. They said he failed to read the room while addressing the recovery of the Indi MP, who is currently undergoing treatment one week after the incident outside her electorate office in northern Victoria.

Taylor rejected the notion that robust parliamentary debate causes physical violence. He argued that the Westminster system is designed to settle differences through rigorous argument rather than force. He stated that those who resort to intimidation or violence cross a line that must never be crossed. Taylor also urged judges to sentence people found guilty of intimidation more harshly and suggested that Australia should be celebrated more readily rather than viewed through a lens of guilt.

Steggall, who sits beside Haines in the lower house, said she was personally disappointed in the speech. She noted a direct link between words and actions, arguing that Taylor did not grasp the lesson Haines would want others to learn. She applied the same standard of care to media reporting, election advertising, and social media.

On Monday in Canberra, Steggall spoke with Phil Haines, the MP's husband. He asked members of parliament to raise the bar so that a meaningful shift toward respectful debate would be in place before Helen Haines returns to the chamber. Steggall emphasized that while politicians can disagree respectfully, their words have a tangible impact.

Ryan called Taylor's response hugely disappointing. She questioned how he aspires to lead a political party if he does not believe the words used in public life matter. She stated that if parliament could not rise to the occasion after such an unthinkable event, it never would.

A 43-year-old man has been charged in connection with the attack, and police continue their investigation without disclosing an established motive. The episode has prompted a wider debate about the safety of MPs and the conduct of parliamentary debate.
