Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan arrived in Kyiv on Monday, October 26, accompanied by three senior cabinet members. The delegation includes Vladimir Bolea, the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development; Anatolie Nosatîi, the Minister of Defence; and Dorin Junghietu, the Minister of Energy. Their presence signals a focus on practical infrastructure and security matters alongside diplomatic goals.
During the visit, Tofan is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Ruslan Stefanchuk, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada. A statement from the Moldovan government indicated that the leaders will discuss strengthening bilateral relations and expanding economic and trade cooperation. The agenda also covers regional security and the progress of both nations toward joining the European Union.
The trip follows recent high-level contacts between the two governments. On October 14, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal met with Tofan to address shared energy sector challenges and winter preparations. Just two days earlier, on October 12, Tofan stated he was considering purchasing natural gas from Ukraine to meet domestic needs. He confirmed that this specific issue would be a topic during the current trip to the capital.
Tofan and Koretskyi are both expected to participate in the Kyiv International Economic Forum. The event focuses on investment opportunities and the development of economic ties. Moldovan President Maia Sandu has also recently noted that her country is prepared to accept a new influx of refugees from Ukraine if the humanitarian situation deteriorates further.
The meetings mark a continued effort to align the two countries' strategic and economic interests. The delegation's itinerary includes formal talks with the head of state and the parliamentary speaker, followed by economic discussions at the forum. The visit concludes with the planned departure of the Moldovan delegation from the Ukrainian capital.
