Lucie Kon received a settlement of more than £400,000 from the BBC. The award-winning producer and her legal team reached an agreement to end unfair dismissal proceedings. The corporation paid the sum without admitting liability. The funds were partly financed by the television license fee.

Kon left the broadcaster in April 2026. Her departure came nineteen days after she won an Oscar for her documentary work. She had spent years producing major programs such as Panorama, Today, and BBC Breakfast. Her career also included an Emmy and a BAFTA. She cited a toxic workplace environment as the primary reason for her exit.

The dispute began following the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel. Kon stated that colleagues reacted negatively when she described Hamas as evil. One colleague responded that Zionists were also evil. Kon alleged that another colleague required her to call Israel a terrorist state if she referred to Hamas as terrorists. These comments, Kon said, created a hostile atmosphere for Jewish staff.

Kon helped establish an internal WhatsApp group for Jewish employees and wrote to then-Director General Tim Davie. She proposed a film about the October 7 events. A manager later informed her that she could no longer oversee the project because she was partial. Kon claimed the manager explicitly stated the decision was made because she was Jewish. Kon filed a formal grievance, which the BBC did not uphold.

The BBC initially rejected her appeal. During the process, the corporation restricted her ability to travel and commission work. By December, Kon was on sick leave for stress. Upon her return, she was notified that her role was at risk of redundancy. She applied for a newly created position but was rejected. The BBC made her redundant in April 2026.

The settlement marks the first known payment by the BBC to an employee alleging antisemitic behavior. A BBC spokesperson noted that their internal processes did not uphold Kon's specific allegations of antisemitism. The corporation acknowledged the personal impact of the situation. Kon stated that she continued to experience bullying from colleagues who remained at the company.

Kon said the environment forced her to hide her identity. She described feeling like she had "Jew stamped on her forehead." She added that standing up for her beliefs led to her departure. The BBC described her as a valued member of staff with many years of dedicated service. Kon is the first person known to receive a settlement under these specific claims.
